NIGHTLY INTELLIGENCE BRIEF

〔Overnight Brief〕Copper’s Supply Squeeze Meets AI-Spending Anxiety: LME Copper Falls $202 as Chile Posts Its Lowest Quarterly Output Since 2006

LME copper closed at $14,154 per metric tonne, down $202, after Kitco reported the three-month benchmark at $14,140, down 1.5%, and on course for its first monthly loss since June, with concern that heavy AI spending may not generate sufficient returns weighing on risk appetite. Yet Chile’s Q3 output fell 12% y/y and 8.7% q/q to 1.16 million tonnes, the lowest quarterly reading since end-2006; Jin10 said the contraction is tightening global mined supply as electrification demand accelerates. The overnight pressure was broader: LME aluminum, zinc, lead, nickel and tin all closed lower, while domestic metal futures were also mostly lower. Cochilco nevertheless set average copper-price forecasts of $6.18 per pound for 2026 and $5.95 per pound for 2027 and projects a 2027 refined-copper surplus equal to 0.8% of global consumption as Chilean output recovers 3% to 5.08 million tonnes, even as Rio Tinto has begun a progressive restart at Oyu Tolgoi. Chile’s monthly output data, the Oyu Tolgoi restart and Cochilco’s surplus forecast are the next checks.

0. Overnight Arc

  • **[NEW] Broad LME selloff:** Copper finished at $14,154 per metric tonne, down $202; aluminum at $3,069, down $10; zinc at $3,842, down $40; lead at $1,910, down $6; nickel at $15,271, down $265; tin at $48,873, down $824; and cobalt was unchanged at $33,510 [1]
  • **[NEW] Domestic follow-through:** Shanghai tin fell 1.97%, Shanghai nickel 1.71%, Shanghai zinc 1.16%, the international copper contract 1.07%, Shanghai copper 0.87%, Shanghai lead 0.40%, Shanghai aluminum 0.36% and aluminum alloy 0.26%, while alumina rose 1.00% and stainless steel was flat [2]
  • **[NEW] Cross-asset backdrop:** At the domestic night open, SC crude oil rose more than 3%, while Shanghai silver fell nearly 4%, Shanghai tin more than 2%, and Shanghai gold, soda ash and caustic soda each more than 1% [3]
  • **[NEW] Core tension:** Kitco said concern that heavy AI spending may not generate sufficient returns weighed on risk appetite, while Jin10 said Chile’s output contraction is tightening global supply as electrification demand accelerates [4][5]

1. Copper Price Mechanism

  • **[NEW] Price path:** Kitco’s 17:20 GMT snapshot put the three-month LME copper benchmark at $14,140 per metric ton, down 1.5%, after a one-week low of $14,133, and on track for a 1.8% decline in October and the first monthly loss since June [5]
  • **[NEW] Close versus session low:** The final close at $14,154 per metric tonne was above both the $14,140 snapshot and the $14,133 one-week low [1][5]
  • **[NEW] Demand mechanism:** Kitco noted that copper is used in power and construction while investors questioned whether heavy AI spending would generate sufficient returns [5]
  • **[ONGOING] Forecast anchor:** Cochilco set its average copper-price forecast at $6.18 per pound for 2026 and $5.95 per pound for 2027 [6]

2. Chile Supply and Restart Crosscurrents

  • **[NEW] Quarterly contraction:** Chile’s National Statistics Institute data, as calculated by Jin10, put Q3 copper output at 1.16 million tonnes, down 12% y/y and 8.7% q/q, the lowest recorded quarterly level since end-2006 [4]
  • **[NEW] Follow-through:** Chile’s National Statistics Institute reported September copper output down 15.1% y/y, while Jin10 said output for the first nine months was down 8.6% [4][7]
  • **[ONGOING] Structural drag:** Bloomberg reported that Chile expects only a modest output recovery next year after a historic slump, with aging mines, deteriorating ore quality and increasingly difficult geology [8]
  • **[NEW] Thin-source flag:** BMI’s warning that El Niño could put copper and nickel production at risk appears only as a headline in the packet, with no supporting detail provided [9]
  • **[NEW] Offsetting supply response:** Rio Tinto said it had begun progressively restarting underground operations at its Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia after completing safety reviews following an October 29 seismic event that caused a localized rockfall but no structural damage [10]
  • **[NEW] Global significance:** Jin10 said Chile produces more than one-fifth of global mined copper and that falling Chilean output is tightening global supply while electrification demand accelerates [4]

3. Nickel, Tin and Lithium Flow

  • **[NEW] Market check:** The LME nickel main contract was earlier down more than 2% at $15,205 per tonne, while Shanghai tin closed down 1.97% and Shanghai nickel down 1.71% [2][11]
  • **[NEW] Lithium supply expanded:** IGO said its minority-stake Greenbushes project in Western Australia increased SC6-basis lithium output 36% y/y in Q3 to 435,000 tonnes [12]
  • **[ONGOING] Greenbushes case:** International Lithium Association director Robert Carruthers said Greenbushes maintained production through the 2023-2024 low-price period and should remain a leading global lithium project for decades [12]
  • **[ONGOING] Nickel cost relief:** Vale’s CFO expects fourth-quarter nickel costs to decline and return to roughly the second-quarter level [13]
  • **[NEW] Nickel flow:** The Philippines exported 8.93 million tonnes of nickel ore in September [14]
  • **[NEW] Tin exports contracted:** Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade reported September refined-tin exports of 3,970.25 tonnes, down 18.04% y/y from 4,844.21 tonnes and down 17.36% m/m from 4,804.30 tonnes [15]

4. Tariffs, Balances and the Falsification Test

  • **[NEW] Tariff alignment:** The US Aluminum Association is urging Canada and Mexico to match Washington’s tariffs on aluminum imports from outside North America, and CEO Chuck Johnson said identical border rates would support fair trade within the region, while the group took no position on whether the current 50% levy should be lowered [16][17]
  • **[NEW] Strategic meeting:** Aluminum Corporation of China Vice President Dong Jianxiong and Rio Tinto Chief Safety and Technology Officer Ma Kai met at Chinalco’s headquarters on October 26 to discuss deeper strategic cooperation and advancing key projects [18]
  • **[ONGOING] Balance forecast:** Cochilco expects the refined-copper surplus to equal 0.5% of global consumption in 2026 and 0.8% in 2027 [19]
  • **[ONGOING] Output forecast:** Cochilco expects Chile’s copper output to grow 3% in 2027 to 5.08 million tonnes [20]
  • **[ONGOING] Falsification test:** Chile reaching Cochilco’s projected 5.08 million tonnes in 2027, together with the projected 0.8%-of-consumption refined surplus, would weaken the immediate supply-tightness case; continued contraction in Chile’s monthly output would support it [4][20][19]. Rio Tinto’s progressive Oyu Tolgoi restart is the additional supply-side check [10]
